Body Confirmed As Man Accused Of Killing Parents
Cabbie Artur Shehu's Body Was Pulled From Lake Michigan 8 Days Ago
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
The body pulled from a North Side stretch of Lake Michigan April 8 has been positively identified as the 33-year-old cabdriver suspected of killing his parents earlier this year in Villa Park.
The body is that of Artur Shehu, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office early Wednesday. A last known address was not immediately available.
About 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, authorities arrived at Montrose Harbor after a passerby noticed a body in the water. An autopsy April 9 revealed the man suffered a gunshot wound behind one of his ears, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Artur Shehu, 33 and an Albanian immigrant, suffered from mental illness, his friends said. He is accused of shooting his parents Syrja Shehu, 66, and Safo Shehu, 67, to death at their Villa Park home in January.
Sometime after the slaying, police found Shehu's taxicab in the 3700 block of North Recreation Drive in Chicago -- just blocks from where the body was discovered in the water this week.
Inside the cab, a note was found -- apparently authored by Shehu -- that requested police be notified that he killed his parents. He also provided an address where he planned to take his own life, said federal court documents. The FBI aided in the investigation.
Last week other officials said they believed the body was that of Artur Shehu.
"The preliminary indications are that it's Artur Shehu, who killed his parents in Villa Park," said Paul Darrah, spokesman for the DuPage County state's attorney's office. He declined to say how officials arrived at the preliminary identification.
