Police Board To Rule On Whether To Fire Abbate

Cop Is Criminally Charged With Beating A Female Bartender

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Formal charges against Anthony Abbate, the Chicago police officer accused of beating a bartender, have been filed at the Chicago Police Board.

The city's newly formed Independent Police Review Authority had already announced it was recommending the firing of Abbate, whose alleged actions were caught on videotape and viewed widely around the country.

Supt. Jody Weis, who has agreed Abbate should go, filed the charges Thursday at the Police Board. The board will review the accusations and conduct a hearing before deciding whether to fire Abbate, 39, or give him a lesser punishment.
