A City of New Orleans Amtrak train from Chicago crashed in Mississippi Tuesday afternoon, leaving at least seven people injured, two critically.
The train left Union Station late Monday night, headed for New Orleans. It collided with a garbage truck in rural Mississippi on Tuesday afternoon.
Passenger Bill Herndon said he heard a sudden pop and the train felt like it hit something. Then he saw a lot of debris flying past the window.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said there were 96 passengers aboard the train and 11 Amtrak employees.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn says two of the injured were waste management employees and five were from the train.
A hospital spokeswoman says two people are in critical condition. One is in fair condition.
Investigators said the injuries were all non-life-threatening.
The remaining passengers were placed on charter buses and taken to New Orleans.
