U. Of C. Student Remembered 1 Year After Murder

Amadou Cisse Was Shot And Killed Near Campus

Students and staff at the University of Chicago are gathering Wednesday to remember graduate student Amadou Cisse, on the one-year anniversary of his murder near campus.

Cisse, 28, was shot and killed just steps from his home near 61st Street and Ellis Avenue around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, 2007. Four people are awaiting trial in his murder.

A memorial and prayer service is set for 6 p.m. at Bond Chapel, at 1050 E. 58th St. on the U. of C. campus, and a reception will follow at the lounge in Pick Hall, at 5828 S. University Ave.

Cisse, a graduate student from Senegal, was set to receive a degree in chemistry that was later awarded posthumously. He was shot in the chest during an apparent robbery attempt.

Demetrius Warren, 18; Eric Walker, 17, Jamal Bracey, 18, and Benjamin Williams, 22, have all been charged with first-degree murder in Cisse's slaying. They have also been charged with attempted robbery.

Walker, Warren and Williams are also accused of committing a string of robberies in and around the University of Chicago campus on the day of Cisse's murder.

All four defendants are being held without bond pending trial.
