CHICAGO (CBS) ― Thousands of people laced up their running shoes, ready to dash off to help the victims of child abuse.

As CBS 2's Rob Johnson reports, the 10th Annual Wrigley Start Early Run and Walk stepped off on Saturday morning.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the race not only raises awareness, but it also helps organizations that are working to eliminate child abuse. CBS 2 is a proud sponsor.

The event benefits two organizations. One, Voices for Illinois Children, was created in 1987 and works to look out for children's needs and the conditions that affect them, and monitor community and government action on children's behalf.

The other, Prevent Child Abuse America, has been a leader in promoting abuse awareness since 1972. The organization works both nationally and locally for child abuse prevention in 39 states and the District of Columbia.

There is a timed race starting at 9 a.m. and a 5K walk starting at 9:30 a.m. The race makes a circuit from the Grant statue at Fullerton and Cannon drives near the Lincoln Park Zoo up to Barry Avenue for 5K runners and Irving Park Road for 10K timed race runners. There is also a kids' dash, starting at 11 a.m.

Both corporate and open teams are participating, and awards will be given to the first place corporate and open teams in both the corporate and open categories for the 5 and 10K runs. The teams with the largest number of participants and greatest amount of funds raised will also receive awards.
