Vandals Damage Dozens Of Chicago Parking Meters

CHICAGO (CBS) ― As many as 60 parking meters were vandalized with putty and spray paint in the Uptown and Ravenswood neighborhoods on the North Side Thursday morning.

Police were notified sometime before 11 a.m. about multiple parking meters that had been vandalized in the 5100 block of North Clark Street. When officers investigated the report, they found about 15-20 meters on both sides of Clark Street had been damaged with silver spray paint and what appeared to be putty shoved in the coin slots, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.

A short time later, more meters that had been vandalized with the same colored silver spray paint were discovered at 5006 – 5057 N. Sheridan Rd.; 1000 – 1200 W. Argyle St.; 4945 – 5015 N. Kenmore Ave.; and 4945 – 5015 N. Winthrop Ave., according to Perez, who said a total of about 40 damaged meters were found in those four blocks.

Other meters had goo smeared on them or left to dry in the coin slot. A few of the meters' display windows were painted over, and others had the words `SLAVE' and `KILL COPS' written in black marker on them.

It appears that the putty will be able to be scraped off and will not cause permanent damage, Perez said.

Police believe all of the meters were vandalized by the same person or persons and Lincoln District police are investigating, the officer said.

This is not the first time parking meters in Chicago have been vandalized. Back in March, local residents protested increased rates by breaking, spray painting and jamming meters.

The Associated Press and the STNG Wire contributed to this report.
