Two men were charged with robbery Sunday for their alleged involvement in a pair of separate abductions and robberies -- one involving two college students and another that led to a sexual assault -- last Thursday near the University of Illinois at Chicago on the Near West Side.
Lawrence Baggett, 26, of the 1200 block of West 13th Street, was charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault with a firearm and one count of armed robbery with a firearm, police News Affairs said.
About 9:30 p.m. last Thursday, Baggett allegedly approached a woman walking to her car in the 1500 block of West Fillmore Street with a gun and robbed and sexually assaulted her, police News Affairs Officer Eugene Mullins said.
An e-mail sent last Friday to about 37,000 UIC students and staff said a woman affiliated with UIC was walking to her car in the 1500 block of West Fillmore about 9:30 p.m. when a man with a handgun forced her into her car. He made her drive to an ATM and withdraw $500, then sexually assaulted her, officials said.
He forced her to drive to the 1300 block of West Lexington, where he assaulted her again, then forced her to drive to the 1500 block of Blue Island, where he fled.
A Hillside man was charged in a separate incident that occurred last Thursday. Damien Scott, 25, of the 400 block of North Wolf Road in Hillside, was charged with two counts of armed robbery with a firearm, two counts of kidnapping while armed with a firearm and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, police News Affairs said. Scott was also cited with driving without a license and driving without insurance.
About 9 p.m., Scott and two other men allegedly forced two men walking in an alley in the 2300 block of West Taylor Street into a van. The drive pointed a gun at the men, ages 19 and 25, and demanded they surrender their valuables and enter the van, News Affairs said.
An e-mail from UIC said two students were walking in an alley Thursday night behind 850 S. Western Ave. when two men armed with handguns forced them into a green minivan driven by a third man.
Officials said the men threatened to kill the students and demanded their credit cards and PINs. The students' checkbooks and cell phones were also stolen. The students were bound with tape and held for 20 to 30 minutes before they were released at 37th and Rockwell streets. One student was treated for minor cuts to the mouth at UIC Medical Center.
On Saturday, Chicago Police saw a vehicle matching the description provided by the victims. Officers stopped the van and the driver, Scott, was unable to provide a driver's license. He was taken into custody, where police found him in possession of a loaded handgun, News Affairs said.
Scott was later positively identified as one of the robbers, News Affairs said.
Police are still searching for the other two robbers.
