MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (AP) ― A Sept. 28 preliminary hearing has been set for the 62-year-old suspect in the killing of a Southern Illinois University student from the Chicago area a quarter century ago.

Timothy Krajcir made his first court appearance this afternoon in Jackson County on four murder counts connected to the 1982 strangling death of Deborah Sheppard.

A judge assigned a public defender to Krajcir and ordered bond to remain at $1 million.

Sheppard was a 23-year-old senior from Olympia Fields majoring in marketing when her naked body was found on the floor of her Carbondale apartment.

Authorities say Krajcir also was a student at the school at the time.

When charged last week, he already was incarcerated at the Big Muddy Correctional Center outside Ina.
