Suspect in Bank Robbery Slits Own Throat
Suspect In Critical Condition
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
A man suspected of robbing a Wicker Park bank Saturday morning is in police custody after slitting his throat with a box cutter prior to being arrested, authorities said.
Police from the Wood and Shakespeare police districts responded to a robbery at a TCF bank branch about 9:20 a.m., police said.
The man dressed in body armor walked into the bank and committed a "takeover robbery" with an undisclosed weapon and a chemical agent believed to be pepper spray, said Ross Rice, FBI special agent and spokesman for the Chicago FBI.
The man ordered customers to the ground and was taking cash from teller drawers when, for an unknown reason, he spayed two of the employees with the chemical agent, Ross said.
The man escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and was apprehended by Chicago Police responding to the robbery. During the capture, the man attempted to commit suicide, Ross said.
Police say the suspect ran to the intersection of Erie and Ogden, where he cut his throat when police tried to arrest him.
The man was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Larry Langford said.
The Chicago FBI field office is investigating and the man has not been charged as of 9:30 p.m.
