Cook County Board President Todd Stroger says he'll once again veto a measure
to roll back part of his controversial sales tax hike.
Stroger said he'll formally reject the plan on Monday, and he hopes his fellow commissioners do not override him at their next meeting.
"I hope that what's good for the county is done by the commissioners," Stroger said at an unrelated event Sunday.
Stroger also vetoed a similar measure to lower the sales tax hike a few months ago. But since then, a new law was passed reducing the number of votes needed to override a veto.
Stroger last year got a majority of board members to raise the county sales tax a percentage point, giving Chicago possibly the highest collective sales tax rate in the nation. Stroger says the county budget, which includes health services for the poor, needs the additional revenue, but critics say his administration is rife with waste and patronage.
