Stretch Your Dollar: Selling Hair, Plasma
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Groceries. Rent. Mortgage bills. They all add up.
In a struggling economy, some people are selling everything including parts of their bodies in order to stretch their dollar. CBS 2's Anne State reports.
Deanna Pendragon and her husband needed a new car, but they didn't want to go into debt. To make some money, Deanna decided to cut her hair for the first time in 18 years.
"I figured this is it," she said. "I can sell my hair. Everybody's always crooned over my hair."
You can now place an ad to sell your locks on sites like
TheHairTrader.com. Clients earn anywhere from $150 to more than $2,500.
"Because of the economy, we've experienced about a 40 percent increase over the last few months," says Jacalyn Elise of TheHairTrader.
Deanna sold 32 inches for a cool $2,000.
"It was really easy and I was shocked at how high it went," she said.
Something else people are selling: plasma. It's the liquid portion of your blood that's used for medical therapies. Donations are steadily increasing.
"The trend has been existing for the past three-plus years," said Joshua Penrod of
the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association. "I haven't seen any indication that that is going to be any different in the future."
Compensation ranges from $20 to $40 dollars per donation, and you can donate often.
"Donating whole blood you can do once every eight weeks," Penrod said. "Donating plasma you can do twice in a seven-day period."
It takes about two hours to donate plasma. For more information, check outÂ
