Lisa Stebic Remembered, Two Years After Vanishing

Friends, Relatives Hold Out Hope Case Of Missing Plainfield Woman Will Be Solved

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (CBS) ― It's been two years since a Plainfield mother of two simply disappeared.

Thursday, on this anniversary, there was a prayer service near Lisa Stebic's home.

CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports friends and family are holding out hope for some kind of resolution.

"She vanished out of our lives, out of her children's lives, but she didn't vanish out of our hearts," a relative, Melanie Greenberg, said.

Twenty-four months. No real answers. But those who know and love missing Plainfield mom Lisa Stebic say they're not going away.

"We won't live our lives in fear. We won't be silenced. We need our justice," Stebic's second cousin, Don Zimmerman, said.

About 50 people came to a gazebo near Stebic's home to honor her with stories and thoughts, including this one from her young niece.

"My daughter said, 'When I go to heaven, I will hold hands with Lisa,'" Greenberg said.

Two years ago, Stebic's estranged husband, Craig, told police his wife vanished after leaving the house to go for a run. He's been under a cloud of suspicion since.

"Craig Stebic is a person of interest and a suspect in the case," Plainfield Police Chief Don Bennett said.

Two weeks ago, Will County prosecutors said there were developments in this case but wouldn't elaborate. Stebic's cousin hopes something clicks, soon.

Kozlov asked him, "Do you believe Craig is responsible for this?"

"In my opinion, based on a conversation I had with him short of two years ago -- and a comment that was made to me that I won't share tonight –- yes, I do," he replied.

Chief Bennett says Craig Stebic hasn't spoken to police in almost two years and hasn't talked to reporters, either. And even though the Stebic house is less than 100 yards from where this vigil took place, neither he nor his children attended.

Craig Stebic has never been charged with any crime.
