A note containing white power and "hateful language" was sent to the South Side office of U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush on Thursday.
Shortly after noon, the Chicago Fire Department was called to the congressman's office at 700 E. 79th St., after a white power was found in a letter sent to Rush, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
A Level 1 HazMat response was called as a precautionary measure, but the white powder was determined to be a harmless household product, Langford said.
"There is absolutely, positively no threat at all," Langford said, though adding the letter included "hateful language."
A couple of employees in the office opened the letter and alerted authorities. No one was injured, according to Langford.
Crews were leaving the scene as of 12:45 p.m.
