Criminal Linked To Rape By DNA Sentenced To Life
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A Chicago man was sentenced to life in prison after a DNA hit identified him in the brutal attack and sexual assault of a 23-year-old woman.
Robert Weeks, 46, was sentenced Wednesday to life by Cook County Judge Michael Brown after being convicted by a jury on Oct. 6 of the 2001 sexual assault on the North Side, according to a Cook County State's Attorney's office release.
Prosecutors said Weeks was identified in the 2001 sexual assault after being convicted in 2004 for aggravated battery to a police officer, the release said.
He was sentenced to 4 years in prison for the crime and DNA was submitted to the CODIS database. Weeks' DNA was then matched to DNA taken from two rape kits for sexual assaults that happened in 2000 and 2001. Weeks was charged in 2006 for both attacks.
On Feb. 7, 2001, a victim was walking home from work near 1136 N. Milwaukee Ave. when Weeks grabbed her from behind and pulled her into a vacant lot. He then hit her in the head with a rock and dragged her to the back of a garage where he beat and sexually assaulted her, the release said.
She sustained a broken nose and a crushed orbital bone in the attack.
The other case solved by DNA analysis is pending before Judge Brown. In that case, on Dec. 22, 2000 at 1829 W. Evergreen Ave., a 28-year-old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted while walking home from a restaurant. The next court date for that case is Jan. 8, 2010.
The 2001 incident is the second aggravated criminal sexual assault conviction for Weeks. In 1982, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for a rape in Chicago. He also has several cases pending for making threats to public officials while being incarcerated.
