Man Held Without Bond After Teen Shooting

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man was held without bond Sunday in the murder of a 15-year-old boy gunned down near his South Side home Friday night in the Pilsen neighborhood. Another teen was wounded in the shooting.

Efrain Alcaraz, 20, of the 1800 block of West 22nd Street was charged late Saturday with first-degree murder and attempted first degree murder for the Friday night shooting, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.

Alcaraz is being held without bond following a Sunday morning hearing, a court spokesman said.

Police said two teen boys were shot in the 2300 block of South Seeley Avenue about 11:20 p.m. Friday. One teen was initially in critical condition at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with multiple gunshot wounds and the second teen was in "stable" condition at Stroger with a gunshot wound to the back, police said. One of the teens died at the hospital.

Daniel Calderon, of 2310 S. Seeley Ave., was pronounced dead at Stroger at 12:31 a.m. Saturday, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. A Sunday autopsy showed he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The two were shot by gunfire from a passing vehicle and the incident is believed to be gang-related.

Information on Alcaraz's next hearing was not immediately available.
