Fruit Fly Infestation Closes NW Side Restaurant

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Northwest Side restaurant remains closed Wednesday after being shut down late Tuesday by city health inspectors.

Piatto at 5304 W. Devon Ave. was shut down after Department of Public Health inspectors discovered a fruit fly infestation in the kitchen and dining areas, according to a release from the department.

Restaurant management also was cited for a poorly maintained ice machine in which mold was found and having no sanitizing solution in the automatic dishwashing machine.

Tuesday's inspection was triggered by a customer who called 311 to complain about fruit flies on his food, a foul odor on the premises and employees not washing their hands.

While the fruit fly allegation was founded, Tuesday's inspection found no foul odor and employees were washing their hands appropriately, the release said.

The enforcement action was the 233rd time in 2008 that inspectors have shut a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code.

Representatives of Piatto will face an administrative hearing Jan. 8 and fines expected to total $2,000, the release said.

Chicagoans who believe a restaurant or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner should call 311 to report it.
