Man Reported Missing Found Dead In Ditch
SCHERERVILLE, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
The man found dead in a northwest Indiana ditch on Tuesday had been reported missing for nearly two months when a worker found him.
The deceased man was identified as Highland, Ind., resident Anthony "Tony" Packauskas, 46. Lake County Coroner David Pastrick said Packauskas likely had been dead for two or three days.
Packauskas, an employee at a Highland car wash, was found lying face down in water in a Central Avenue ditch at 451 Winston Ct. in Schererville, just west of Kennedy Avenue. An employee at a nearby business called police after spotting the body around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The cause of death has not been determined, Pastrick said, but there were no internal injuries and no internal or external markings. Toxicology reports to determine the cause of death will take at least a week, he said.
There were no obvious signs of foul play, he said.
How Packauskas ended up in the ditch and where he'd been for two months is being investigated, officials said.
Packauskas, who lived in the 9700 block of 5th Street, had no identification on him.
Schererville police got his name after contacting Highland police about missing person reports. An aunt identified the body, Pastrick said.
Family and friends had not heard from Packauskas since Nov. 13, according to a posting on the Highland police Web site. He was last seen leaving his home in the Lakeside subdivision of Highland on foot, the Web site said.
