NIU VP Sends Letter To Students Prior To Classes

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) ― Northern Illinois University's memorial to honor five students killed in a Valentine's Day shooting will be broadcast live on regional television and radio stations Sunday.

The school announced that Comcast will televise the memorial on channel 103 in the Chicago area and that Rockford's cable network will air it on channel 16.

The memorial also can be heard live on radio stations including WGN 720AM in Chicago, WNIJ 89.5FM in DeKalb, WDEK 92.5FM in DeKalb/Chicago and WNTA 1330AM in Rockford.

The memorial can also be viewed online at www.niu.edu.

Brian Hemphill, NIU Vice President for Student Affairs, released a letter Saturday to students who will be returning to class on Monday: "The tragedy of February 14, 2008, was an unspeakable horror that shook the very foundation of our community. Now the process of healing begins. As you return to NIU, you will be greeted by over 550 counselors whom I have assembled to help you deal with your transition back to a regular schedule of academic and personal pursuits. These counselors, wearing red armbands, will be available to you in class and at other campus locations, at your request, on Monday and Tuesday. You will also see Student Affairs staff members, wearing black armbands. They will also be available to assist you, whenever you need them, to answer questions and concerns that affect your life as an NIU student.

Our transition to normality may be gradual, but we will rise above that moment that made our world stand still. We will heal, and we will move forward together.

Forward, Together Forward…"

The event is set for 7 p.m. in the school's Convocation Center.
