NIU Building Reopened After Bomb Threat

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A bomb threat was made at Northern Illinois University at about 2 p.m. Thursday, according to the university's Web site, causing the evacuation of a campus building for about two hours.

The threat targeted the Health Services building near the intersection of Lucinda Avenue and Normal Road. That building, and a nearby building, were evacuated and the area around it closed until 4 p.m.

The written threat was found on a piece of paper in a stairwell of the building, which is on the east side of the campus, according to a statement from the university.

Campus police and a canine unit secured the scene.

The Health Services building and the adjacent Telecommunications building were the only buildings that were evacuated, according to the NIU Web site.

The university posted news of the threat on its Web site and notified the campus via e-mail and text messages.

All classes continued as normal. No classrooms were affected by the closure. Student Counseling Services extended their hours Thursday night until eight o'clock for students needing assistance.

A little more than two months ago a gunman opened fire in a lecture hall on the DeKalb campus, killing five students before turning the gun on himself.

NIU students held a vigil Wednesday night in honor of the 32 students who were killed one year ago in a massacre at Virginia Tech.
