NIU Plans Vigil To Mark Anniversary Of Shootings

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) ― An outdoor candlelight vigil will end a day-long list of activities at Northern Illinois University marking the first anniversary of a campus shooting that left five students dead.

The DeKalb school is calling this year's Feb. 14 activities "NIU Remembers." Events include a morning commemorative ceremony at the NIU Convocation Center and a luncheon where scholarships will be awarded to memorialize the five slain students.

There also will be counselors available across campus.

Later in the day NIU President John Peters will place wreaths at Cole Hall, the site of the shootings. Then, students, faculty, members of the community and others will gather at the school's Martin Luther King Commons for the candlelight vigil.
