Teen Killed In Car Crash, 17-Year-Old Charged

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A 15 year-old girl died early Sunday after being hit by an automobile in north suburban Prospect Heights.

Monika Skrzypkowski was struck by an automobile at North Elmhurst Road and West Kenilworth Avenue, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Skrzypkowski was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights at 12:07 a.m., the spokesman said.

Prospect Heights police refused to comment on the incident early Sunday.

The suspect, Kevin Schuh, 17 of Mt. Prospect is in custody and has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated DUI with bodily harm or death.

Friends, family members, and loved ones huddle and pray for Monika Skrzypkowski, a 15 year-old Hersey High School sophomore run down and left to die Saturday night. She was attempting to cross busy Elmhurst Road when she was struck and fatally injured.

"We lost an angel in our family," said Dominique Szydlo.

An angel who was killed police say by a fellow Hersey High School student. Police say Scuh, the 17 year-old senior was drunk when he ran over Skrzypkowski and took off. Detectives caught up with him after he called 911 a short while after the crash.

"He attempted to make a report for criminal damage to the vehicle and the officers that responded to the scene observed that the vehicle matched the description of the vehicle they were looking for from the hit and run from the witnesses from the scene," said Prospect Heights Police Chief, Bruce Morris.

Schuh was arrested on Monday and driven from the police station to bond court to face reckless homicide charges that could put him behind bars for up to seven years if he's convicted.

"We have four kids now… we have three kids now and we have an angel in our family and she is going to help us," said the victim's father, Artur Skrzypkowski.

Artur Skrzypkowski lost his oldest daughter in the weekend hit and run and now says the house has what feels like a void that cannot be filled.

"I'm going to miss her dancing. I'm going to miss her voice and her good heart," said Margaret Skrzypowski, the victim's mother.

A Polish Mass for Monika will be held at St. John The Evangelist Church in Streamwood Monday night, at 7:30PM.

Bond for Schuh was set at $500,000.
