Bond For Gynmastics Coach Set At $550,000
WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Bail was set Friday at $550,000 for a former Aurora gymnastics coach facing a re-trial on charges he molested seven young students during lessons at his family's gym.
The bail was set for 31-year-old Michael Cardamone during a court hearing that also saw the one-time coach plead not guilty to new perjury charges filed against him last month.
The perjury charges allege Cardamone lied under oath nearly three years ago during court testimony stemming from the sexual abuse charges.
Meanwhile, attorneys and family members also disclosed today that Cardamone's mother, Linda Lynch, has been indicted for allegedly altering gym records before her son's 2005 trial on sexual abuse charges.
Lynch, who wasn't present in court, has been charged with felony forgery, said her daughter, Alysha Millard.
DuPage County prosecutors wouldn't comment on the new charges against Cardamone and his mother, but Millard ripped the allegations against her relatives.
"It is a witch hunt," said Millard. "None of this is true." Cardamone was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted in March 2005 of fondling seven female gymnasts while coaching them. He was acquitted of molesting seven other young students.
His conviction was overturned on appeal last year, but prosecutors opted to seek a new trial.
Cardamone also was sentenced to three years in prison for harassing a witness he called police as he left a court hearing and falsely reported that a parent of one of his accusers appeared to be driving drunk.
The new perjury charges allege Cardamone lied under oath while testifying during that case.
Cardamone must post a $55,000 cash bond to be released from the DuPage County Jail.
"We're very pleased the judge set a bond. Hopefully, we'll get him out quickly," defense attorney Joseph Laraia said.
