Daley Claims Progress Toward Ending Homelessness

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Mayor Daley says Chicago is making steady progress toward ending homelessness. But, advocates say not enough is being done.

Newsradio 780's Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports that three years into the Chicago's 10-year plan to end homelessness, Mayor Daley says the City's on track and last year helped more than 5700 families stay out of shelters.

At a homeless shelter at 1456 West Oakdale, Mayor Daley says the city is trying to provide alternatives to the traditional "shelter" model while adding more than 2800 interim and permanent housing options.

The mayor says more federal funding is needed to further the plan, But Julie Dworkin, policy director for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, says the City should be committing more of its own resources and not just forcing people out of shelters before there's really somewhere for them to go.
