Man Shot By Police In Englewood Neighborhood
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A 19-year-old man was shot by Chicago Police Sunday morning on the South Side's Englewood neighborhood after pointing a weapon at an officer, according to police.
The "offender" was shot by an officer in the 6400 block of South Wood Street about 11:10 a.m., according to police News Affairs. He was taken with a gunshot wound to the leg to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in good condition.
Tactical officers working in the Englewood District were conducting a directed mission in the area of West 63rd Street and South Honore Street when they attempted to approach a man believed to have a weapon, according to a Chicago Police release.
The man fled the scene, and in a gangway in the 6400 block of South Wood Street the offender turned and pointed a weapon at an officer, the release said. The officer, "fearing for his life," then opened fire and struck the man.
No officer was injured in the incident.
Independent Police Review Authority Spokesman Mark Payne said a weapon was recovered from the scene.
IPRA is investigating the shooting.
