Man Rescued From Burning Home Near Lockport

LOCKPORT, Ill. (STNG) ― A man in his 60s is hospitalized Thursday evening after he was rescued from a burning house near southwest suburban Lockport.

Crews were dispatched to a single-family home at 412 W. Oak Ave. in an unincorporated area near Lockport about 3 p.m. A fire was burning on the first floor of the house and there were reports of a person trapped inside. A few minutes after arriving on the scene, firefighters located a man in his 60s inside the home on the first floor and rescued him, according to Lockport Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Paul Hertzmann.

The man was resuscitated on the way to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, but his condition was not immediately known, Hertzmann said. According to the Will County Sheriff's office, the victim was talking at the hospital.

Unconfirmed dispatch reports indicated the victim was in serious to critical condition.

Several other family members were outside the home when firefighters arrived though it is not clear whether they were inside the house when the fire started. No one else was injured.

The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago is assisting eight people who were affected by the fire, including the man who was hospitalized. Four of those people are children ages 10, 3, 1 and 4 months. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the family in the form of food, infant formula, seasonal clothing and shelter, according to Maria Corral, the organization's Director of Communications for the Chicago area, who also said the family will not be able to immediately return to the home because it sustained major damage.

The fire is under investigation and crews remained on the scene as of 6 p.m., but the blaze does not appear to be suspicious, according to Hertzmann.

The Will County Sheriff's office is aiding in the investigation.

The American Red Cross reminds people that as it gets colder, incidents of house fires will increase. Families or individuals needing assistance after a fire can contact the Red Cross at (312) 729-6100.
