Lisa Stebic Relatives Remember Missing Mom

Family Members Hope Drew Peterson Case Helps Their Cause

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (CBS) ― The arrest of Drew Peterson in the 2004 homicide of Kathleen Savio is giving hope to another family.

The loved ones of Lisa Stebic think it could lead to new developments in the case of the missing mother.

Stebic disappeared from her Plainfield home on April 30, 2007. Her estranged husband, Craig Stebic, has been named a person of interest in the case, but he denies any involvement and has not been charged with any crime.

CBS 2's Pamela Jones talked with Lisa's family about how the Peterson case could make a difference to the Stebic investigation.

"Mother's Day is another one of those poignant days," Melanie Greenberg, a relative of Lisa Stebic, said. "It's very difficult. We're gathering as a family and there's somebody missing today. And there's two children in Plainfield that are missing their mother today."

The family of Lisa Stebic met to share a mother's day meal Sunday in Buffalo Grove, all the while remembering the young mother they lost two years ago. That's when Stebic's estranged husband, Craig, told police she'd vanished after going for a run.

But her family never believed that. They've held vigils and hit the streets searching for information.

"You never know, if one other tip came in, it might break this case open," Greenberg said.

And while they push to keep the young mother's face on the minds of the public, they say they also pause to remember the family of Kathleen Savio.

"Kathleen Savio's family has been waiting five long years to see justice be served," Greenberg said. "They've seen the man that they were convinced had killed their relative walk free all of this time, and finally, he's behind bars."

She's hoping a new law allowing some hearsay evidence to be admitted in the Savio case might be used in the Stebic case, too. Lisa Stebic's family says she feared for her life and made plans for if her worst fears actually came true.

"She told her neighbor if anything had happened to her, that Lori was to call the police right away," Greenberg said. "She said if something happened, she was going to send her kids down to Lori. There were just all sorts of things our family didn't know."

Lisa Stebic's family is wishing prosecutors in the Savio case the best of luck. They'll be watching to see how this all plays out.

There's a $75,000 reward for information in the Stebic case.
