Final Burr Oak Defendant Is Released On Bond

Carolyn Towns, 49, was office manager of Burr Oak Cemetery. She allegedly sent her gravediggers out to unearth and dump bodies as she resold burial plots and pocketed the money.

The final defendant accused of digging up remains and stacking bodies in a moneymaking scheme at a historic black Chicago-area cemetery has been released from jail.
Cook County Sheriff's officials say someone posted $25,000 cash bond for Carolyn Towns on Thursday afternoon. She left Cook County Jail around 4 p.m.
Towns was a former manager at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip. She was being held on $250,000 bond.
She and three Burr Oak gravediggers face several felony charges, including desecration of human remains, conspiracy to dismember human bodies and theft. Authorities estimate 300 graves were dug up over several years.
The other three defendants were already free on bond. All four have pleaded not guilty.
