Mom, Child Jump From Window To Escape Invader

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A woman and her daughter were hurt when they landed face first after jumping out of a window to escape an armed and masked home invader late Monday on the South Side.

About 11:30 p.m. a masked, armed man who was wearing gloves followed a man inside a second-floor apartment at 849 W. 76th Street, where a woman and her 5-year-old child were, according to a police source.

The attacker began duct-taping the three and during the process he tried to have one of the victims make a telephone call to an unidentified person. While the attacker had moved to the back of the apartment, the woman and her 5-year-old daughter were able to break free and jumped nearly 25 feet out of a side window. Both landed face-first onto the pavement of the alley. Meanwhile, the male resident was able to jump out of a front window, the source said.

"They thought he [the attacker] was going to kill them,'' according to the source, who said the three did not know the masked man. The mother and child did not go through any glass, as the window and screen were open because of the warm weather.

The woman, 28, is in serious but "stable" condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and the female child is in good condition at University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital for observation, police News Affairs said.

According to the source, the 5-year-old was having a CAT scan done at the hospital, and both her and her mom suffered head injuries that were apparently not life-threatening.

Two adults other than the woman and her child jumped out of second-floor windows, police News Affairs said, noting that neither of the other adults was injured.

The attacker did not fire the weapon or pistol-whip the three, according to the source.

The attacker did not take anything from the apartment but police suspect he may have been looking for drugs. He fled out a back door and was not in custody as of 1:30 a.m.

Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
