FBI Nabs '45 Second Bandit'

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Rogers Park man who may be responsible for more than ten bank robberies in Chicago and surrounding suburbs was arrested on the North Side Thursday night after a foot chase and physical altercation with arresting officers.

Andrew Johnson, who last lived at 1335 W. Fargo Ave., was arrested and charged with one count of bank robbery after his Thursday night arrest, according to an FBI release. He was charged Friday in the Nov. 24, 2008 robbery of a Bank of America branch at 5466 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Johnson is also suspected of at least nine other local bank robberies, but had not been charged in those robberies as of Friday afternoon.

Johnson, 19, was dubbed the "45 Second Bandit" since he allegedly gave bank employees 45 seconds to meet his cash demands, the release said.

Johnson was arrested by Chicago's FBI Violent Crime Task Force Thursday night in the 7300 block of North Sheridan Road following a foot chase and physical altercation with arresting agents, the release said.

The FBI credits tips by the public along with their investigation in Johnson's arrest.

The FBI plans to review the additional robberies, along with the alleged physical altercation with federal agents, and charge Johnson for those crimes on a later date.

If convicted on the one felony bank robbery charge, Johnson faces up to 20 years in prison.
