An IDOT contract worker has reportedly died after he and another worker were hit by a car on I-57 Wednesday afternoon.
The accident happened at about 2:40 p.m. in the southbound lanes at 119th Street, according to Illinois State Police.
The two men were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. One of the men died at the hospital and the other was seriously injured, according to State Police Lt. Luis Gutierrez.
The driver also struck a construction truck and tried to flee on foot, police said. Responding troopers apprehended the driver shortly after the crash. He was in custody but no charges had been filed as of 4:25 p.m.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Claffey said the workers are contractors who were picking up barricades on the left shoulder at 119th Street when they were hit.
All lanes of southbound I-57 were closed as of 5 p.m. and motorists were being redirected to the frontage road around the accident site and back onto I-57 at 127th Street
Northbound lanes were not affected.
