Hammond, Ind. Officer Kills Knife-Wielding Man
Cop Who Fired At Combative Man Is On Leave As State Police Investigates
HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A nine-year veteran police officer shot and killed a man Thursday night after the suspect allegedly charged at the officer with a knife, the Post-Tribune is reporting.
Jerry Beverly, 39, of the 7200 block of Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 10:12 p.m. Thursday at St. Catherine's Hospital, according to the Lake County Coroner's office.
The officer who fired the gun has been placed on administrative leave, according to a written statement. Police Chief Brian Miller declined to identify the officer, citing department policy.
"Upon cursory review, this shooting follows the Hammond Police Department guidelines concerning the use of deadly force by our officers," Miller said a written statement.
Police were called to Beverly's apartment at 9:25 p.m. to assist an ambulance, police said. They were told Beverly had a pain in his arm and had been drinking. When they arrived, police said, they saw Beverly holding a knife, which he refused to drop.
The officer tried to talk Beverly into putting the knife down, police said, but he eventually raised his arm and charged. The officer fired two shots before Beverly fell.
Hammond police said they were called to Beverly's apartment last month when he reported he had cut himself with a knife and wanted to die. Beverly refused to drop the knife during that call, as well, but was eventually transported to a local hospital for a 24-hour evaluation.
Miller said he was notified of the shooting immediately after it happened and was on the scene shortly after 10 p.m. The Indiana State Police will investigate whether the shooting was justified.
