Hammond Soldier Killed By Bomb In Afghanistan

HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 24-year-old northwest Indiana soldier was among three servicemen killed Jan. 9 in Afghanistan. Spc. Joseph M. Hernandez of Hammond died of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle, according to the Department of Defense.

Two other soldiers, Maj. Brian M. Mescall, 33, of Hopkinton, Mass.; and Spc. Jason R. Parsons, 24, of Lenoir, N.C., were also killed. The incident occurred in Jaldak, in the Zabul Province of Afghanistan.

They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Hohenfels, Germany.
