Mixed Results For Growth Hormone In HIV Patients

CHICAGO (AP) ― A study slated for publication this week indicates small doses of human growth hormone may ease complications from the AIDS virus.

The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association and is among reports prepared for presentation today at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.

The study in the Chicago-based publication notes low-dose injections of human growth hormone, HGH, reduces fat deposits around internal abdominal organs by about 10 percent. The injections also lowered blood pressure and levels of blood fats called triglycerides in test subjects.
 
But researchers note the HGH therapy also resulted in elevated blood sugar levels, and may have limited benefit in treating HIV-associated fat abnormalities.
