Johnny Depp. Christian Bale. Oscar winner Marion Cotillard.
They were all in Chicago Thursday night for the premiere of "Public Enemies." The movie is about John Dillinger, the notorious outlaw who was gunned down 75 years ago outside the Biograph Theater in Lincoln Park.
CBS 2's Anne State talked to the stars and the fans.
This story is legendary in Chicago. CBS 2 talked with all of the stars, who gave the impression they appreciate the history behind the movie and the city of Chicago.
Hundreds of people lined up along Illinois Street in the Streeterville neighborhood, hoping to catch a peek at the stars of the new film.
Walking the red carpet were Depp; Bale, who plays an FBI agent pursuing Dillinger, and Cotillard, who plays Dillinger's girlfriend.
Dillinger made a name for himself robbing banks and breaking out of jail during the Depression.
Depp said Dillinger was a hero, a Robin Hood to many Americans who blamed the banks for their economic problems.
And not only that.
"He was a deeply loyal guy, which I think is probably rare for someone in his line of work," the actor said.
The film was shot on location in Chicago and Indiana. The Illinois Film Office says the film pumped $47 million into the state economy, something director Michael Mann was not aware of, until we told him.
Chicago native Bill Petersen of "CSI" fame was also on hand for the premiere. He said Hollywood films go in cycles and perhaps we'll start seeing more movies filmed here.
That would be fine with fans, who mobbed Depp for autographs. The love affair between fans and stars was mutual. The actors all raved about the city of Chicago and the people here. Cotillard said she was a fan of Gibson's steakhouse.
"I adore Chicago. I love it, I love it here," Depp said.
