Claypool Bows Out Of County President Contest
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool is telling fellow commissioners he won't be a Democratic candidate for county board president against incumbent Todd Stroger in 2010.
Claypool, who was widely expected to run, told one colleague it is "not a good fit for me," a commissioner told CBS 2. He did not return phone calls. Crain's Chicago Business reported Thursday that Claypool is eyeing a private-sector job in the health care industry.
He ran on a reform agenda in 2006 but lost to an incapacitated John Stroger Sr., who suffered a massive stroke a week before the election. Stroger later resigned as board president and was replaced by his son in a weighted vote of Democratic local party officials.
The junior Stroger went on to defeat GOP Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica the following November. Stroger has been beset by political scandals and controversies, including an unpopular sales-tax hike he pushed through.
The elder Stroger died in January 2008.
