Long Waits For City Stickers Frustrate Drivers

Computer Problem Blamed For Up To 3 Hour Waits

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Complaints have rolled in from people waiting in long lines doing something that everyone who drives in Chicago has to do: buy city stickers. Customers at the city's satellite location blame a breakdown in the city's computer system for the sometimes three hour wait.

Vicky Hernandez, a city sticker customer, says the problem with the system should have been fixed.

Kristine Williams of the City Clerk's Office, insists a team is working on the issue as fast as they can. "We'll get it back up so we can get things moving as fast as we can."

Customers at the city's satellite location weren't the only ones complaining about computer problem. CBS 2 also got a couple of emails and phone calls from viewers saying the "city had a new computer system and it was down at the department of revenue." When we called the city back, Williams checked and said she found no problems. She did admit that the city had a new electronic system this year that prints the stickers out, but she insists it makes the process faster. "In the past it took four or five minutes, now it takes less than a minute."

If the system is so much faster, why are there still complaints of longer lines? Williams blames human nature. Customers are waiting until the last minute to get their stickers and consequently have a longer wait.

What many customers don't know, however, is that standing in line is not their only option. There is a 15 day grace period, meaning you won't get a ticket until after July 15.

It's not too late to order it online. If you do it by tomorrow you should get the sticker before the July 15 deadline. In addition to city locations you can also buy stickers at currency exchanges, supermarkets, and even some aldermen offices sell them. There are at least 300 vendors in the city.
