Obama Comes Home For Church
Congregation Welcomes Presidential Hopeful With Open Arms
by Mike Flannery
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
With the launch of his presidential campaign less than two weeks away -- every part of Senator Barack Obama's life is being examined by journalists.
A number of them tagged along when he went to church today and CBS 2's political editor Mike Flannery had a chance to talk with the senator.
The senator and his wife clapped their hands and swayed to the Gospel music at Trinity United Church of Christ. The politically potent South Side congregation is where, almost a quarter-century ago, Barack Obama said he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior; where he and Michelle were married; where their two daughters were each dedicated to Christ after their births and where the congregation applauded and hugged the family during Sunday worship, as reporters from around the country watched.
Afterward, Obama spent nearly two hours autographing copies of his books.
Next to him and also signing was his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who Obama credits for inspiring the title of his newest book, "Audacity of Hope."
"Rev. Wright's sermon inspired the title of the book and was part of my speech at the 2004 convention and I'm glad we've got it on CD," said Obama. "I think we're spreading that sermon a little bit more to the people here today."
"As long as he stays the same ol' Barack as when I met him 22-23 years ago, it's no different," said Wright. "That's one of the things I've admired about him."
People here were excited that Obama plans to launch a campaign for President in less than two weeks.
"It's always wonderful to be home," Obama said.
