2 Indicted in U of C Robbery, Murder

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Two teens were indicted Monday in connection with a series of violent incidents in the Hyde Park area that culminated in the fatal shooting of University of Chicago graduate student Amadou Cisse on the South Side last month.

Eric Walker, 16, of the 7700 block of South Marshfield Avenue, has been indicted on one count each of first degree murder and attempted armed robbery along with three counts of armed robbery, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

Demetrius Warren, 17, of the 5800 block of South Michigan Avenue, was indicted on three counts of armed robbery and one count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of attempted armed robbery, Simonton said, noting Warren is not charged with the murder of Cisse.

Walker, charged as an adult, and Warren were ordered held without bail by a Cook County Judge in November and are both scheduled for arraignment on Jan. 11.

Cisse, 28, was shot in the chest during an apparent robbery attempt just steps from his home in the 6800 block of South Ellis Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 19.

A third man, Benjamin Williams, 21, of 15115 Sunset Dr. in Dolton, has been charged with one count each of first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm, and two counts of armed robbery, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin.

Williams allegedly acted as a scout and lookout for a group of teens involved in a series of robberies Nov. 18 near the U. of C. campus. Williams was ordered held without bond on Dec. 15 and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 3, Simonton said.

Authorities said Williams was one of five people involved. The other two remain uncharged.

Williams allegedly helped identify potential victims and then watched out for police. Authorities said he admitted his role in the spree.

Investigators believe Walker, Warren and Williams committed a string of robberies in and around the University of Chicago campus. The teens allegedly rented a car -- a silver Pontiac with two red doors -- that was later captured by security cameras in the area of the attacks, helping police break the case, authorities said.

Cisse, a grad student from Senegal, left International House about 12:30 a.m., university officials said. An hour later, he was confronted by three offenders near his apartment. Cisse was shot, apparently after resisting the robbery, the source said.
