Man, 19, Indicted In Logan Square Rape

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A South Side man was indicted Thursday on charges he raped and robbed a woman at knifepoint in early July in the Northwest Side Logan Square neighborhood.

Akeem T. Alexander, 19, of the 7000 block of South Artesian Avenue, was indicted on one count of armed robbery, one count of aggravated unlawful restraint and 20 counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

Bond for Alexander was set at $1 million on July 10, Simonton said.

The rape happened in a backyard in the 2600 block of North Kimball Avenue between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. on July 9, police said.

A woman rode her bicycle to the residence and parked it in a gangway when she heard or saw something behind her and screamed as a man pulled a knife. The attacker walked her a few yards away and assaulted her, police said.
He allegedly spoke words to the effect of, "If you don't make any noise I will let you go," according to police. The suspect also stole $54 and two credit cards from the woman, according to Shakespeare District police Capt. Marc Buslik.

After the assault the woman called police at 2:02 a.m. and gave a good description of the attacker -- a 5-foot-6 black man in his 20s or 30s with dark skin, wearing khaki shorts, brown shirt, gray hooded-sweatshirt and possibly a black ski mask, according to police.

Officers in the area on an unrelated incident saw a man matching the description, who allegedly ran to the Logan Square Blue Line station, where he was arrested at 2:11 a.m. He was later identified by the victim, according to police.

The suspect did not injure the woman with the knife, which was recovered.

Buslik said it was not immediately known whether the suspect is responsible for any other attacks, but detectives are looking into that possibility.

Alexander is scheduled for arraignment on Aug. 19, Simonton said.
