6-Year-Old Girl Accidentally Shot In Oak Forest
Police: Friend Of Girl's Mother's Was 'Showing Off' Gun
OAK FOREST, Ill. (CBS) ―
A 6-year-old girl was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being accidentally shot by a friend of her mother's who was "showing off" a gun at a home in south suburban Oak Forest.
The friend, a 21-year-old man, was showing off the gun at the living room of a home in the 15700 block of South Lamon Avenue in Oak Forest around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
While doing so, the small-caliber pistol accidentally went off, and struck the girl, traveling through her chest and just above her throat, police said.
The girl was taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, and later transferred to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital, police said.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, she was reported in good condition. Oak Forest police Chief Dennis Olszewski said the girl was up and talking.
No one had been charged with a crime as of late Wednesday morning, but Oak Forest police planned to meet with the Cook County state's attorney's office Wednesday afternoon to discuss charges.
Police said they have not determined who owned the gun. Olszewski said his officers had contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
