Southwest Side Crash Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Injured

SUV Strikes Light Pole Near 55th And Kedzie

CHICAGO (STNG) ― One person was killed and another critically injured in an accident in which an SUV struck a light pole and a tree Monday morning on the Southwest Side.

The accident occurred at 3:25 a.m. in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle lost control, struck a curb, a tree and then rammed into a light pole, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

Three people were in the SUV. One person was dead on arrival at Mount Sinai Hospital, one person was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital of Cook County and a third person refused treatment, Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

According to Kubiak, one passenger was dead on the scene, a second passenger was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County and the driver was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police are also investigating another accident that happened in the same area a short time later. That crash happened about 3:55 a.m. at the intersection of 66th Street and Kedzie Avenue. Police do not believe the two crashes are connected, according to Kubiak.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
