5 Men Killed By Gunfire Overnight

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Five men were fatally shot late Friday and early Saturday during an especially violent night throughout the city and suburbs.

Tijuan Edwards, 18, of 1913 S. Trumbull Ave., was shot at 1916 S. Trumbull Ave. and was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Police said Edwards was shot in the head.

Edwards was talking to a 25-year-old man in the street when a multiple gunmen approached on foot and shot both men at 8:19 p.m. The 25-year-old was taken in "stable" condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to the left arm, chin and thigh, police said.

The gunmen are in custody, but no charges have been filed as of Saturday morning, police said.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating.

About 11:20 p.m. Friday, a West Side man was fatally shot in the South Side's Englewood community.

Jovon Lee, 24, of 3406 W. Berteau Ave., was shot at 5928 S. Maplewood Ave. and was dead on the scene, the medical examiner's office said.

Police found Lee shot in the neck.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known. Wentworth Area detectives are investigating, but nobody is in custody Saturday morning.

About 2 a.m. Saturday, a man was fatally shot across the street from his Northwest Side home.

Melvin Vallejo, 29, of 6100 W. Diversey Ave., was shot at 6105 W. Diversey Ave. and was dead on the scene, the medical examiner's office said.

Police said Vallejo was involved in an argument that became violent and he was shot in the head.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating, but nobody is in custody Saturday morning.

About 2:20 a.m. Saturday, a man was fatally shot on the South Side.

Few details were available Saturday morning, but police said they found a man shot in the 1000 block of West 60th Street.

Rodrick Scott, 21, of an unidentified home address, was pronounced dead at 3:34 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the medical examiner's office said.

Wentworth Area detectives are investigating, but nobody is in custody Saturday morning.

A man was also shot and killed Friday night in south suburban Dolton, authorities said.

Maurice Jenkins, 35, of 15129 Beachview Terrace in Dolton, was found shot at his home and was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:10 p.m. Friday, the medical examiner's office said.

Dolton police are investigating but were not immediately available for comment.

The medical examiner's office will perform autopsies on all five men Saturday.
