2 Men Shot, 1 Fatally, In South Side Park

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― One man is dead and another critically wounded after they were shot during a Father's Day barbeque Sunday night in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

About 10 p.m., the two men were part of a gathering at Grand Crossing Park in the 7600 block of South Ingleside Avenue when an unknown gunman started firing and shot them, according to police News Affairs.

The gathering was a Father's Day celebration that brought 500 to 1,000 people to the park throughout the day with their families, police said. No other incidents were reported.

Norman Maxey, 32, of 6308 S. Oakley Ave., was killed in the shooting, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Maxey was dead on arrival at Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, and a 20-year-old man was listed in critical but stable condition at the same hospital, authorities said.

A motive for the shooting is not immediately known and no one is in custody.

Calumet Area police are investigating.
