Fans Ready To Cheer Sox On To Another Victory
by Vince Gerasole
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Fans are hoping the Chicago White Sox are knit tightly enough to pull off another win. They take on the Red Sox again after a game one victory.
The hits just kept coming yesterday at The Cell. At the end of nine innings, the White Sox won it 14-2.
The team knows better than to get complacent against last year's World Series champs.
"David Wells is a competitor and he's gonna come out and try to stick it up our rear end tomorrow so we have to bring the same intensity and do it again," Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski said yesterday after the game.
But one of the keys to another victory is the support of the fans. Another sold out crowd will be cheering its team on to what will hopefully be another victory tonight.
The music outside the cell this morning, performed by a pep band from nearby De La Salle High School, only underscores yesterday's phenomenal win.
"Best game of the year," said Sox fan Ralph Soch. "First game of the playoffs and they blow 'em out."
"I think yesterday the Sox showed why they won 99 games in regular season," said Brother Michael Quirk.
But one fan is always riding high with the Sox. That's Bridgeport's Dee Lipke. At age 76, she's tooling around with her grandsons on their Sox-colored Harleys.
"I have been a White Sox fan since I been born," she said.
"My grandmother isn't a fan, she's a fanatic," said her grandson, John Risley.
According to Dee, "there's no other team in Chicago."
"She taught me more about baseball than anyone in my family," said another grandson, Bill Lipke.
"Every Friday night, we were always at the games when there were games," Dee said.
"The lady wants to be buried in her jersey," John said.
This is, after all, the woman who braved cold temperatures with her gal pals in 1959 to purchase World Series bleacher seats.
"We stayed in line for two days and took turns coming home and feeding the kids," she said.
From her grandsons' motor biking black and white tribute to the team, it's easy to see she's passed on Sox passion, as the city now joins in chanting "Go Go White Sox."
