12-Year-Old Girl Found Dead In Alley
Teen Had Been Missing Since Nov. 15
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A 12-year-old girl who disappeared earlier this month has been found dead, her family told CBS 2.
Jahmeshia Conner's body was found early Monday in a South Side alley today near 64th and Marshfield. Neighbors police found a girl's body leaned against a garage door -- a body residents say couldn't have been there more than 24 hours.
The girl's mother, Birdie Lewis, said she and a family member were asked to identify Jahmeshia's body by watching a computer image of her. The mother said he daughter's face was bloody, scratched and "bashed in."
"I don't understand that," Lewis told CBS 2's Pamela Jones. "Why would they do that to her? That's a baby."
Jahmeshia was last seen Nov. 15 between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. as she got on a bus at 63rd and Racine on her way home from her aunt's house.
"She waved goodbye and when the bus pulled off I didn't see her no more," the relative, Denise Lewis, said.
Andrew Holmes of "No Guns, No Violence" took posters all over the city for the two weeks Conner has been missing. His organization is offering a $2,000 for information in the case.
Jahmeshia was a 5th-grader at O'Toole Elementary School. She leaves behind a mother, father and two brothers aged 14 and 3. The 14-year-old says he can't sleep and dreams about Conner coming home.
The Chicago Police Department's News Affairs office said it was waiting on results of a Tuesday autopsy before it could formally identify the victim.
