1 Dead, 2 Severely Hurt In Midnight SUV Wreck

Crash Shuts Down 103rd Street Near Sangamon Street

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― One person was reportedly killed and two others critically injured when an SUV which witnesses said was weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed struck an electrical pole on the Far South Side late Friday night.

The accident happened close to midnight at 103rd and Sangamon streets, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

Witnesses reported that the Honda Pilot SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic before the driver lost control. The vehicle fishtailed and struck an electrical pole, Langford said. The pole the Honda struck was "an older one, the kind that doesn't break," he noted. Witnesses told fire crews on the scene they estimated the SUV was traveling at approximately 80 mph, he said.

The impact of the crash ripped out the axle, wheels and the underbelly of the Honda, Langford said, who remained on the scene early Saturday.

All three occupants of the Honda were male, and at least two of them were under 21, Langford said. A nurse who stopped to help out said that one of the injured admitted the three had been drinking, according to Langford.

One was dead at the scene and the other two were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Langford said. A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said as of about 12:30 a.m. Saturday the office had not been notified of the fatality.

An EMS Plan I response was called for the accident. Langford expected that 103rd Street around the scene of the crash would be closed "for some time" while authorities investigate. The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is on the scene.
