Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Mason is leaving for a Cook County position.
Mason,
who has been at the helm of the city's health department since January 2006, will become Chief Medical Officer for the Cook County Health and Hospitals System.
He will leave his city post on Dec. 1.
"I'd like to thank Dr. Mason for his dedication and commitment during his tenure. He is an outstanding physician and a gifted communicator," Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a news release. "He promoted many city initiatives on his weekly radio program and has been a very active speaker on health issues. We wish him well in his new position."
Mason took over the department with a mandate to, in his own words, "make the citizens of Chicago the healthiest people in the United States."
Just after he started, he issued a call to reduce obesity after Chicago was named the fattest city in America. More recently, he has been the public face of the city's fight to educate and prepare the public for the H1N1 flu.
Mason is trained as a urologist and a surgeon. He is also host of "Doctor in the House," a health-oriented talk show on WVON radio.
