Rush University Medical Center is requiring all employees, students, volunteers and contractors to get a yearly seasonal flu shot.
The hospital, which dominates much of the Illinois Medical District on the city's Near West Side, announced the new policy Tuesday. The hospital also will require the H1N1 flu vaccine, depending on its availability.
Rush officials say they have ordered enough vaccine for more than 8,000 employees and 1,500 students. The shots will be free.
Some exemptions may be granted for medical and other reasons. But those with exemptions will be required to wear a face mask in all patient areas during flu season.
Several infectious disease groups support required flu vaccination for health workers. Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood also has made seasonal flu shots mandatory for all workers.
