Healthy Alternatives Abound At Taste

Humana Releases Special List, Map Of Healthy Options

CHICAGO (CBS) ― When you think of the Taste of Chicago, you probably think of going from booth to booth and chowing down on giant turkey legs, thick pizza slices, samosa, shawerma and curried goat, then topping it off with Eli's cheesecake, chocolate-dipped bananas.

But for those looking to balance the healthy with the tasty, the options aren't limited to tofu and seitan.

Humana health care has compiled a list of healthy suggestions for Taste-goers, and at their booth no. 32 along Columbus Drive, they are distributing a map highlighting the booths where all the healthy options can be found.

The list includes:
• Chop grilled summer vegetables salad – Grill on the Alley
• Gazpacho – Grill on the Alley
• Fruit Cup – Hashbrowns
• Chicken Kabob – Kasia's Deli
• Chicken Taco – Los Dos Laredos
• Cheese Pizza (Taste Portion) – Lou Malnati's
• Malnati Salad (Taste Portion) – Lou Malnati's
• Fries in Soy Oil with Spices – A Natural Harvest
• Roasted Corn with Cajun Soy Butter – A Natural Harvest
• Tamale with Black Bean Salsa – A Natural Harvest
• Celtic Corn on the Cob – O'Brien's Restaurant

"We had everyone submit the nutritional values, and anything that had less than 4 grams of saturated fat, no trans fat, less than 4 grams of added sugar, and was made of 100 percent whole grain, made the cut," said Dr. Michael Roizen, Humana's medical advisor for consumer health and a bestselling author and wellness expert.

Eating healthy is about controlling genetic function, Roizen explained.

"Whether our genes are turned on or not are our choices," Roizen said. "So for example, if you have more than 4 grams of saturated fat in a meal, you turn on a gene that makes inflammatory proteins that gives you plaque in your arteries. Similarly, if you eat other foods such as whole grains, you actually turn off the genes that cause the growth of cancer cells."

Walking accomplishes the same, and there is plenty of that to be done at the Taste, Roizen said.

While there is no shame in the occasional splurging, but a poor diet can injure cells, Roizen said.

Roizen will be at the Taste later Tuessday. He will demonstrate healthy cooking techniques at the Dominick's Cooking Stage at 1 p.m., and will conduct a question-and-answer session and sign his book, You: Staying Young at the Humana Senior Dining Pavilion from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
