The number of confirmed H1N1 flu cases in Illinois keeps on rising, and is now approaching 500 statewide.
As of Monday, there were 487 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu in Illinois. Among them were 214 in Chicago and 142 in suburban Cook County. Also severely affected were DuPage County with 39 cases, Will County with 33, Kane County with 26, and Lake County with 15, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Only one case, in Winnebago County, had yet to be confirmed, the department said.
A case is "confirmed" when additional laboratory testing backs up initial test results. Until then, the case is called "probable."
The state began doing its own confirmation tests on May 3, which meant quicker turnaround on results and large increases in confirmed cases.
To stay healthy, IDPH recommends the three C's -- clean: properly wash your hands frequently; cover: cover your cough and sneeze; and contain: contain your germs by staying home if sick.
